VISITING LAKE TITICACA´S POMATA

VISITING LAKE TITICACA´S POMATA

Pomata is a community in the southern part of Peru´s Lake Titicaca, referred as The High plateau´s Philosophical Balcony. Over 3860 m or 12668ft asl, just 40 minutes away from Kasani in the border with Bolivia.
Its climate is dry and cold, temperature fluctuates between 6C and 15C during the year.

There´re archaeological evidences from people in the last 10 millennia. Agricultural terraces or patapatas, aya utas or necropolis, irrigation canals, sacred ceremonial sites, etc.
And so, in accordance to archaeologists, Caloyo people, Pakajes, Pukaras, Tiwanakus, Lupakas and Incas have inhabited these shores of Lake Titicaca for very long long time.
The very next 0.25 ml or 400m shore of the lake is the best for potato cultivations.

In the last 500 years there were a huge Spanish-Catholic influence. Young people speak Spanish, meanwhile regular adults they prefer to communicate in Aymara language.
Even in cities like Puno or la Paz Bolivia there´s systematic homophobic discrimination against the Aymara language by same young Andean people.

In the mid of 18th century Jesuits built the Saint Peter cathedral.
The landscapes are amazing, with a majestic vista of the sun island and Bolivian royal range.
Above the western part of Pomata is located qóri kollo hill over 14764 ft. From this natural point view Lake Titicaca looks blue, mysterious and amazing.
We can see in the southern side apu Qhapia a dead volcano that nowadays is a sacred ceremonial site for the Aymara nation.
I was just last week there, people are friendly and there basic eateries and souvenirs houses. Mrs Roxana, a natural pomateña woman was our local guide. She did it very well….thank you kullakita Roxy, thank you Mama qota, Pachamama.
I recommend to taste the typical Pomata´s bread, so delicious.

  1. I read your post on Goodreads about The Adam and Eve Story. Any chance you might send me a full copy to Immaculatelation@gmail.com? Beautiful pictures, by the way.
